  2. No.

I'm not even sure the DTV broadcast format known as ATSC (as opposed to NTSC which is the analog broadcast format) even existed as more than a proposal back around 1995, if even that.

So your faithful VCR won't be able to directly tune and record broadcast TV shows after February 17, 2009.

However, if you have Cable TV, you may still receive analog channels for some time to come after the switch over and could use your VCR to record those shows.  The cable company will convert the digital signals to analog.

There are now DVD recorders on the market that will record ATSC digital signals.  And they'll record up to 8 hours.  I don't expec that the output is HD -- they recorder will "down rez"  the picture to record as a 480p DVD.  An example is the Panasonic DMREZ17S.

The other option is to go with a DVR such as a TiVo HD or a cable or satellite DVR.

But I wouldn't move on a decision until closer to the switch over point.

Also, you might want to look into the voucher for the DTV transition coupon which will give you $40 toward a converter box.
