and is there a way to be able to play my ipod in the car without getting a whole new sterio system?

not all cavaliers come with cd players some only just have AM FM radios.. and to answer the ipod question they sell an adapter that  send the music  through your radio from the head phone jack (an Fm modulator) they are about 20 bucks and up

It depends on the specific car. I do not believe a CD player was standard on the '01 Cavi. Also, the iPod had barely been released, meaning you'll need to buy a tape cassete adapter. Here's a good example:
