  1. It saves fuel.  Jet engines burn a lot of gas when on the ground.

  2. Aircrafts' engine have thier own life and flying hours, if people use them too often just for taxying and parking thier life will decrease and it will cost them hunderds of dollers.

Aircraft is a flying machine and it is supposed to be in air while working, so people use external aid to deal with it while on ground.

  3. When airplanes need to be moved around the airport ramps and hangars, it is frequently for maintenance purposes, and it's just quicker and safer to move them with a tug rather than taxiing.

  4. Aircraft use a lot of fuel for taxying and it therefore makes economic sense to tow them.  There's also the safety aspect of having large jet engines running close to terminal buildings etc.  And no, they don't have an extra engine for taxying - the one at the back is called an APU (Auxilliary Power Unit). It's a small jet engine used for generating electricity.

  5. It is far safer and faster to have a plane pulled by a tug in congested areas of a airport.

Large planes do have an extra engine for this and other purposes, you see it on the tail end.

  6. Most of the time, they do taxi to and from the hangar/gate/runways. Sometimes, they tug them across the airport if they cant find a qualified person to taxi them to maintenance hangars
