My 6 yr old went to the dentist w/Daddy today and the dentist said "she has a cavity in her adult molar" but she has not (yet) lost any of her baby teeth.

So my question is, do we get 2 sets of molars, 1 with the baby set & another w/& when the adult teeth grow in?

  1. no, molars are not considered baby teeth. it is possible though, i"m 15, and my second set of molars hadn't fully came out yet. some people's teeth grow faster than others. don't be alarmed.

  2. Well, yes and no. Your 6 year and 12 year molars are permanent, and we only get one set, anything in front of those are baby teeth and we loose them and get a second set of adult ones. I assume the dentist is talking about one of his 6 year molars - the ones in the very back of his mouth now...

  3. The first set of adult molars comes in at about age 6 for most children.  They come in behind the last baby teeth and many parents are not aware that they have come in because no baby teeth are lost when they erupt.  The second adult molars come in around age 12 for most children.  Again no baby teeth are lost when they come in.  The third molars are commonly known as wisdom teeth.  They may or may not ever fully erupt.

  4. She neednt have lost any baby teeth to have adult molars, as the first permanent molars arrive behind the rearmost baby teeth,as opposed to underneath them, and so there is no pushing out of a baby tooth fvor it to come through
