Do American's think that Ireland is in the UK?

Because it's not. Irish people are Irish, not British. The republic of Ireland is an independent free state. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, but the republic of Ireland is not. Just to clear up any confusion there might have been.

  1. up the RA.

  2. As an American, I would view it as the other way around.  That is to say that in this case, the UK is in Ireland, in the sense that the UK only accounts for 6 of the 32 counties or about 19% of the island statistically.  I have visited both at length.   They were both nothing short of awesome!

  3. I'm American and i knew it wasn't part of the Uk. A lot of people confuse ireland with the Uk. There's a big differnce.

  4. I'm American and I never thought Ireland was part of the UK (then again my grandparents were from Mayo) but I will say that most Americans are idiotic when it comes to anything that doesn't pertain to their own personal world. Most Americans think the Irish wear kilts and play highland (scottish) bagpipes and they think that everyone in Ireland is a member of the IRA.

  5. really? wow I didn't know that.

  6. I'm not really familiar with the ins and outs of Europe but I made no correlation between Ireland and UK.  Apparently I was partially wrong because I didn't know that Northern Ireland was part of the UK.  I was under those impressions because I believe there used to be a bit of hostility between UK and Ireland for reasons I don't know.

  7. I'm afraid so and most other europeans a well...

To be brutally honest, even with it's achievements of the past decade, Ireland is still a small country in europe that not many people care about.

    We must spread the word....

  8. Why did you ask a question and then answer it yourself?

  9. yes and to point out we do have electricity and mircowaves (been asked that one too many times) we don't live in fields cows are not amazing and the native language is irish/gaeilge not Gaelic!!!!

  10. good for you

  11. hey, I'm with ya girl!  Ireland rocks, so does guinness.

  12. The dumb ones do. Although, for people who don't give a d**n about history and geography (a large portion of the population), I can imagine the whole Northern Ireland/Republic of Ireland thing can be confusing. I think when people tend to hear "Northern Ireland" they figure it just means the north of Ireland. I'd be willing to be that the whole one island, two countries thing confuses them too. Don't worry though, those people don't matter.

  13. Thank goodness you cleared that up!

I was getting worried no one knew.

  14. all the yanks do that and they think we got no brains

  15. I hate to say...but alot of German's think Ireland is in the UK as well..or even worse..they think Ireland is part of England..I live in Dublin and I can't count how frequently I have been asked how it is to live in England when I am in Germany..sorry my dear..thats how it is..
