Do Americans commonly use the word pennies?

As in "I found some pennies on the floor"

If they do, are pennies one cent peices or coins of any denomination?

  2. No, pennies are fairly useless these days. We throw them over into a bowl or drawer and they just pile up on us.

  4. Yes.  I have a stack of pennies on my dresser because they're too cumbersome to carry around and count at the cash register.  They specifically mean 1-cent coins.

  7. pennies are a type of coin (the lowest denomination) and as far as i know dont have any common nicknames so you wont confuse them for anything else.

    its good luck to find a penny on the ground (i didnt know if you knew that or not) and yes, pennies are one cent peices!
