  1. And do we really care?  By standard conventional definition, the US is the oldest continuous democracy on the face of the earth.  


  2. Americans use the term, democracy, as a synonym for universal suffrage.  Don't get your shorts in a bunch about it.


  3. No they generally don't. The Government education system teaches the kids that we are a democracy, when we actually a republic.

Term 'republic' is used to designate the ruling other than autocracy (monarchy or dictatorship).  democracy (comes from greek 'demos cratos' - 'power of people') is the ruling of majority of people for majority of people. There is no any 'built-in' provisions for the rights of minority per se in the definition of democracy.
