  1. Of course they do. The English, especially those from the eastern half of England are descendants of Anglo-Saxons.

However, the Anglo-Saxons do not come from Great Britain as you stated. The tribes come from what is today northern Germany and Denmark.

In the Holstein-Schleswig region of northern Germany is a region (and a town) called Engln, the ancestral home of the Angle tribe.

Anglo-Saxon culture, literature, language and folk-lore also still exists. Of course the Anglo-Saxons aren't pagan anymore, but the cultural elements of the ancient Anglo-Saxons can still be seen today in the culture of the English people.

  2. In the early fourth century AD the Roman legions were recalled from Britannia.  This laid the province open, and waves of Germanic settlers - Angles, Saxons and Jutes - crossed the North Sea and settled there.  In due course of time, the Anglo-Saxon culture became pre-eminent and the various kingdoms (Wessex, Mercia, Northumbria etc) were established.

Various waves of settlers/invaders have arrived since - notably the Normans - but the Anglo-Saxon influence is still about, and quite visible if you know what you're looking for.  I'm sure there are also many people in Britain who, knowingly or otherwise, are descended from the earliest Anglo-Saxon settlers.

Anglo-Saxon is the term usually used to describe the invading tribes in the south and east of Great Britain from the early 5th century AD to the Norman conquest of 1066.

    (1) The Angles, who may have come from Angeln,

(2)The Saxons, from Lower Saxony ,Germany

(3)The Jutes, from the Jutland peninsula.

this bloodline was diluted after William the conqueror invaded britain in 1066 ,  and the new "Anglo Norman" culture is usually deemed to be the end of the anglo saxons !

so in summary ... although the bloodline still flows in great britain ... the culture and tribe was replaced a thousand years ago !
