Singapore: $735,000

Malaysia: $300,000

Greece: $290,000 and a job in the civil service for life

Kazakhstan: $250,000

Phillipines: $220,000

China: $117,000 ($37,000 from government, $80,000 from business)

United States: $25,000

Canada: $19,000

The International Olympic Committee does not award cash prizes to the winners. Many countries, however, do offer cash prizes and other incentives to medalists. And some Olympians get paid a performance bonus from sponsors for winning a medal and may sign commercial endorsements that could wind up paying them millions.

The USOC has paid prize money to its winning Olympians since 1984, this year giving out $25,000 to gold medal winners, $15,000 to those who take home a silver and $10,000 for a bronze. Some of the richer U.S. sport federations give additional prize money to their winners as well.
