Most Australian mobile phones will work overseas, but sometimes you need to contact your provider (Telstra, Optus, Virgin etc) to turn it on if you have had your contract for a long time.  Newer contracts have it automatically on.

It is unlikely now that even a pre-paid contract doesn't allow global roaming, but check with the provider.  

Also, if you are using 3G services in Australia, they may not be available in the country you go to if there is no reciprocal deal, but this won't affect calls, just content.

I personally like to turn off all incoming calls or turn off my voicemail so that I'm not charged for accessing it.  I just tend to leave SMS access and/or calls from a certain number for emergencies.

No.You have to arrange with your provider for overseas service.Wont work unless you do so.

Depends on your provider.

If you have (say) Telstra Prepaid, then it comes with international roaming.  However, you will need to check with your provider as to whether or not they have coverage in Vanuatu.
