  1. Most Australians welcome migrants and appreciate that without them, our economy will slow down - we simply don't have enough skilled workers to fill the available jobs. Immigrants are the key to our continued economic growth. Most of us also realise that our society and culture is far richer and more rounded because of our immigrants and we're happy for many more to join us.

We don't like immigrants who refuse to mix in the wider society and who cluster together in closed groups into which outsiders are unwelcome. We don't like immigrants who bring racial and religious problems and attitudes with them.

Ours is a peaceful, non racist and accepting society and anyone is welcome who embraces those principles.

  2. Migrants that join Australia and become part of the country are normally welcomed.

Those migrants who do not want to "fit in" to this country, and make a point of disliking the Australian ways, are normally those who the average "Australian", (whether a migrant themselves or not), will not be happy with.

  3. Australians generally warmly welcome migrants from absolutely anywhere, there is very little racism. However some people, myself included, feel that it isn't wise to increase Australia's population past what it is now, I feel it has reached the limit it can comfortably take due to water shortages and other reasons.

  4. Most of us have no problems with immigrants coming here and staying.

The main issue is that they should learn English and join in the doing activities with the Australians and not keep to themselves in enclaves. They should make an effort to become Australians.

  5. Something like 40% of the population of Australia have at least one parent born overseas.  Where people get the idea that Australians are against immigration is one of life's little mysteries.

  6. If that's the case those people (and it would not be the majority of us) are a little late complaining because we are all immigrants or of immigrant stock except for our indigenous population.

  7. the majority of australians are either immigrants themselves or the direct descendents of immigrants (i have irish grandparents on 1 side)

generally, australians do not have a problem with immigrants and are friendly and welcoming because we are proud of our country and have and ethos of sharing. however, australians are also easily scared by politicians and 'tabloid' media outlets and from time to time these people will goad the general populace towards an anti-immigrant feeling to achieve their own ends (re-election or ratings/circulation).

incidents of anti-immigrant and racist actions are rare but have unfortunately recently achieved some international attention. however, in defence of my compatriots, we have removed the government that was encouraging these recent incidents. even before that many australians formed informal networks to assist refugees who arrived in our country.

while travelling recently i was shamed but not surprised to learn that australia now has the international reputation of being a racist country. however, that is not true. australia is the most multicultural nation in the world, and melbourne is the most successful multicultural city in the world.

if you'd like an insight into the intricacies of australian culture i could recommend checking out this link to popular australian musical artists the herd - http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fus... - the track 77% is a reaction to the former governments and media race baiting and the track THE KING IS DEAD is a celebration of that government losing office

i would suggest reading about australia in wikipedia to get some more information.

oh, welcome to yahoo answers, btw
