  1. There is not really ONE german potato salad.

It varies from region to region. Of course.. all use potatoes and some of them are relatively similar. But your potato salad for example in Munich will be a bit different from one in Stuttgart and this again a bit different from one in Berlin and so on.

    Same with Austria.

Some add bacon others cucumber...in one region it's normal to eat it warm.. in others to eat it cold.

"Also what are the similarities between Austrian and German cuisine?"

I think the most similarities with Austrian cuisine you will find in the south of Germany. Not much a surprise i think as these regions share a border, often same traditions and of course had to deal with comparable environmental conditions. So there you will find typical Austrian food and typical (in this case mainly bavarian) food in the other country.

Of course today you'll also find some of them in very other parts of Germany or Europe.

One example where you can easily see the similarities in South German (especially Bavaria and south eastern parts of todays Baden-Württemberg) and Austrian cuisine is for example the high number of flour based food like "Dampfnudeln", "Kaiserschmarr(e)n" and so on.
