  1. A healthy betta NEEDS a tank that is one gallon or more with proper heating and filtration.

Male betta fish can not stay in the same tank together, nor can a male and a female. They WILL kill one another unless the tank it large and there is enough hiding spots. Even then it's a risk.

Female bettas can live together with the only fighting really being that for dominance.

Betta fish can live in community tanks (with other fish that are compatible) as long as the aquarium is 5 gallons or larger.

Bigger over smaller is always healthier for the fish and in the long run, easier for you.

Bigger means less water changes, smaller can sometimes mean daily.

  2. Uh, well they like big spaces... obviously. Most people keep them in tiny bowls. And they can live in them, but they like big tanks.

  3. I had three betta fish and keep them in small tanks. Not in the same tank, because I was told they would kill each other. But I felt so sad for them because they looked lonely so I lined the tanks up side by side, so the poor things could at least see each other.

You know I never did understand that, if they kill each other when put in the same tank...how do they have babies? Weird...maybe I was lied to.

  4. Betas tend to like smaller areas such as a one gallon tank all to themselves.  They don't like larger areas or being in the same tank as other fish.  Betas like to live alone.  Also don't keep a male betta in with another male betta because if you do, they will fight.  A nice one gallon tank with an air pump would be good, or you can get a vase special for betas and put an aquatic plant in it for air.  Betas are air breathers like humans. Also make sure to get the betta a cave or plants or something to hide in to make them feel safe.  Also, get them a food specially for betas.  Beta fish are also known by the name of siamese fighting fish.

  5. small is good.. not too small though..

  6. Betta's or Siamese Fighting Fish come from the rice paddies of Thailand originally.  They spend most of the year in large areas of water but have adapted to be able to live through the dry season by developing the ability to breathe air at the surface which has led to the misbelief that they like small dirty spaces.

To keep a betta properly you need a 5 gallon heated filtered tank.  They are solitary fish and don't mind being alone.  People tend to place our feelings onto them so we want to give them friends.  They can only be put with another betta for a short period for breeding after being conditioned.  Some of them can live with other fish if the tank is large enough to allow them to feel they have their own territory and the other fish don't resemble other betta's with flowing fins or same body shape.

  7. i would have to say smaller.

  8. Well they would like smaller better but not that small. But sister has a betta and she has like a 10 gallon tank which is to big for a fish that small so I would go for like a 7 gallon tank!

  9. lots of people keep bettas in bowls this isn't because they like bowls it is because as a laberinth fish they are the best fish suited for a fish bowl though I do not recomend it to me the best tank for a betta is a 5 gallion planted tank with heater and filter system bettas do not like a lot of surface movement and with a 5 gallon tank you could have your filter system set up in such a way as to have very little movement on one side of the tank
