Question:

Do Bearded Dragons "Need" Moist Hides?

by  |  earlier

I have a dragon, Yukon, he is about 16 inches long. He is 4 years old and I have never placed a moist hide. I spray him daily though. After all the bearded dragon websites I have read...they never mentioned a moist place...

Please answer! If he needs one I will get him one ASAP!

  1. if you have had him this long, then i wouldnt go changing his habitat now, hes comfterbal. so just keep with the spraying...

  2. If he's four years old you're obviously doing something right, I wouldn't worry about it, I don't have a moist hide for mine either. They are desert creatures, so you really don't need to mist either except when he's shedding.

  3. i wouldnt get him one dragons like dry areas so i wouldnt even spray him daily just get him a basking log or something to soak infront of the light on...

  4. You dont even need to spray him, thats extra. They have low humidity level needs. Dont bother with the moist hide either, personally i dont feel you even need hides atall aslong as they have got stuff to climb on.

  5. does he NEED one?? probably not if you'd had him for four years.

if you recently adopted him, and he just happens to be four years old, you may want to see if he WANTS a moist hide.

go to the dollar store, by a good sized tupperware box. that is cheap. for a dollar. (hense the dollar store) cut a hole into it, put a few sheets of paper towel on the bottom, and wet it down a little. stick the thing into your beardies tank, and voila, moist hide. leave it in there for a few days, misting it regularly, and see if your beardie wants to go in it. make sure his dry hide that he is used too is still in there

if he seems to always soak in his little tupperware sauna, maybe he likes it in there, and from there, if you so choose, you can invest in buying something a little prettier, it won't work any better then the tupperware box, but some ppl like to keep the esthetics nice.

  6. Well considering he's been doing well for 4 years now, I'd say no. They don't NEED a moist hide (they are from the desert silly!). As long as you continue to mist him everyday, you'll be fine. =)

  7. You dont need one. I have raised dragons for years and had no idea what you ment by a moist hide until I looked it up. They come from they desert so they are used to warm dry places.
