  1. For the most part a Blu-ray film will always fill up a 16:9 tv without losing any detail or s******g up the picture. Some films where shot in special formats (ie: A clockwork Orange) and will be more square. Many movies are shot in cinematic widscreen which is 2:35:1 (or somthing like that) which is even wider than 16:9. But it will still look great and much better than a standard dvd or a normal square TV.

  2. No.

Movies have 6-10 different aspect ratios. Movie theaters have those red-velvet curtains that move in/out or up/down so you never noticed the "Black Bars".

BluRay keeps the Original Aspect Ratio (OAR) of the original movie.  People who love movies do not mind the bars.

But - it is your television.  Many of them have buttons that will stretch the screen to fill the frame. Check your remote or manual.

Note: All HD television programs are exactly 16:9  ratio so things like "Terminator: The Sara Connor Chronicles", "Weeds", etc will exactly fill the screen.

  3. Not on every film.

If you view a blu ray movie on a widescreen TV without zooming or doing anything to alter the picture here's what you get.

Check the blu ray box or go online for the aspect ratio.

Movies shot at 2.35:1 and 2.40:1 usually called cinescope will show small black bars top and bottom. This is because those aspect ratios are still wider than wide screen ratios. Movies shot at 1.85:1 will fill up the screen.

TV shows shot wide are usually 1.77:1 and 1:78:1 shows like the Office, battlestar galactica, 30 rock etc. They fill up the screen completly.

Remember, whether a movie fills up a widescreen or not, it has NOTHING to do with the format. This info also applies to DVD and even HD-DVD which is now gone.

    hope this answers your question.

  4. Yes they do. Blue ray uses a full 1080P resolution which is top of the line.  So it will indeed full it up
