  2. In general, no. Blu-Ray DVD players will only give you HD pictures if you play a Blu-Ray disk.

    However, some DVD players have a feature called "Upscaling" which uses special circuitry to improve the definition of standard DVDs. Most of the top end standard DVD players have this feature as do some of the better Blu-Ray players.

    Another way to get a better picture is to use good quality interconnect cables (ideally HDMI if your player has it or, at least composite cables). These will greatly improve your picture.
