  1. Uhm. My whole family is British, and it really depends on which part of the country you are from. My parents are from Southern England, near London, and they pronounce can't as can't. =o

  2. We have the same regional variations that you do, listen to someone from the Bronx and someone from New England and then Virginia.

  3. I'm British and pronounce can't like kant. How do you pronounce it?

  4. I've heard it either "kant" or "kont", depending on the region.

  5. If you are an American you will find that the British pronounce the "A" exactly the opposite as Americans do in just about every instance.  The one that really bugs me is when they are speaking a foreign language like Italian or Spanish.  Pasta becomes Past a. with a flat a.  it  gets worse in Spanish, to the point where they mangle the names of many of the worlds best football players.  It seems that common courtesy and professionalism would require the announcers to pronounce a persons name properly.  It rarely if ever happens.

Then again it is called the English Language.  Might they actually be correct?

Maybe.  But certainly not in Spanish.

  6. I've heard that, but I associate it with more northern English.

The sounding of "a" can vary a lot.

My can't is nearer cah-nt,  with an "ah" sound rather than a short "a"

But I also say "bath" and "castle" with that sort of "a" which is, again,  a more south-eastern  sound.

    Windsor "cah-stle"

    But Newcastle.

  7. depends which part of Britain

in the north of England generally they use a short a sound like in kant ... in the south of England a long ahhhh sound more like karnt ... in other parts iit's more like an or sound or an er

it's very difficult as each regional accent is different and one of the bigggest differences is how they pronounce an A
