Question:

Do Buddhist in Thailand eat beef?

Buddha did not forbid eating meat and he died from eating bad pork. Buddha said "Do not eat meat knowing that it has been killed specially for (your) use; I allow the use of fish and meat blameless in three ways, unseen, unheard and unsuspected"

Draught animals, such as cows and buffalos, are likened to the parents of human beings. Because they give service to mankind, they resemble man’s mother and father. In fact they are man’s parents, brothers, sons and daughters. The Buddha declares them to be man’s own relatives.

  1. The Buddist eat all kinds of meat.My wife is thai. The monks eat what ever was put in there bowl that was given to them by the people as they walk threw the village.

  2. You got your facts confused. A "true" Buddhist does not eat any animals, period.

The Buddha didn't eat pork. He died from eating bad mushrooms.

There are two main schools of Buddhism. Some Thais eat any meat, some don't.

Buddhism has been corrupted over the years.

  3. YES , Buddhists  eat  beef  in  Thailand .

My  wife  and  I  live  in  Isan , people  here  will  eat  anything , rats , frogs , land  crabs , you  name  it .

I  buy  our  meat  at  Tesco-Lotus , we  only  eat  stewed  beef  or  steak  and  Kidney  Pie , very  occasionally , otherwise  fillet  of  pork .

We  eat  local  fresh  fish  too .

In  Isan , where  eating  is  concerned , nobody  thinks  of  Buddha , other  than  to  make  an  offering  or  give  too  the  monks .

  4. yes my aunt does she is from thailand

  5. My favourite beef dish is massuman closely followed by keo-wan with beef (failling which I like keo-wan kung (prawns): prawns are very cheap in LOS compared to my home country so it is a luxury for me to eat a lot of prawns). I first ate beef massuman at a (Buddhist) funeral ceremony and was told that it was a speciality for funerals as it is quite exepensive to make compared to other Thai food and takes a long time to make (has to be cooked very slowly/uses a lot of gas) - I love the way the beef, nuts and spices mix together to create the taste. As it is eaten at Buddhist funeral ceremonies in Thailand I am pretty sure that the answer to your question is 'Yes'.

I also like eating the dried beef from the market as a snack.

True, some Thai Buddhists are vegetarian, but the vaste majority eat nua (and gai, and moo and aharn talay).

Well there are lots of religious things to argue about like Buddhism not allowing killing but Thailand has the death penalty but for me I don't need to think about that (mai kit mak mak : the Thai way), I just enjoy the delicious food.

  6. No.  A true buddhist is vegetarian.

  7. Well, my boyfriend is a Buddhist from Thailand and eats beef. I think that certain Buddhists do not eat meat or only eat meat if it is killed in a certain way. I hope that this helps! :)

  8. My wife does (but not much) and she is buddhist.  What about yours?
