I live near a railroad track and it seems that they are blowing their whistles all the time day and night. IS this true that they run at the same frequency 24 hours a day 7 days a week?

  1. Most railroads try to run trains on a consistent operating schedule. Most of them have a two hour time window on each train to allow for unforeseen problems that could occur. The federal railroad administration requires all rail lines to sound the whistle at all public crossings. The reason you hear it so much,is because if the engineer does not follow these instructions, he or she are subject to  monetary fines if we hit a motorist at a crossing if we don't follow these rules. This includes ringing the bell, sounding the horn, and having the headlights on bright. My suggestion is to invest in some of the ear plugs that they make us wear, or find a new place to live. Sorry, but that's the cold hard facts of living by the RR tracks.

  2. All Railroads run on a Time Schedule 24/7

  3. A fairly large number of freight trains did run on a schedule at one time, lasting up until the mid 1970s.  Trains that ran on a scheduled were called "regular" trains.  Trains that did not run on a schedule were called "extra" trains.

Though they no longer run on a time table schedule, certain trains, such as piggy back trains or other expedited freight trains, will run at nearly the same time each day.  They are usually run "on time" out of the terminal that they originate, but once under way, they are sugject to many of the same delays that the non-expediters experience, with the exception that they are usually given right over opposing non-expeditied traffic.

  4. close to it but the only way to know is know someone working at near yard since 911 this sensitive information and it;s not told that easy even better get ascanner and listen to 160.230 or around that freqeuncy to hear the trains in your area.

  5. The modern railway, especially the larger systems, run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, just about 365 days a year.

Each line will see variations in it's trains, such as the number, size, what they carry, and when they run.  However, if you live near a line that sees a large number of trains, you probably see a consistent amount over a 24 hour period, if for no other reason than the railway is trying to space them evenly to avoid congestion.

It's tough to predict when the trains run, even when you work for the railway.  But, if you're observing them running frequently at all hours of the day and night over a length of time, then yes, they probably run at a pretty even frequency near you.
