Do Canadian (TD) debit cards work in the U.S?

I'm going to the U.S. but I've never used debit cards in another country before, I've only had cash.

But i don't want to make such a huge withdrawal, so will it work?

  1. If they are visa/mastercard debit cards you will have no problem, if it is simple atm card you should not have a problem withdrawing from cash machines, although I'm not sure how it would work for point of sale transactions

  2. Yes, you can use your TD card in ABMs in the US and most other countries provided they are on the same network as TD (On the back of your bank card are a series of symbols ("Green Machine", "Plus" and "Interac", as long as the bank machine in the US has one of the same symbols it will work). There will be extra charges from your bank for each withdrawl (exchange and foreign service fees).

Odds are you will not be able to use your bank card to make purchases (debit) directly in stores as the US system is set up differently than ours.

You're best off to withdraw some money from your bank in US dollars before going to the US just to save on exchange and service fees for ABM usage.

    Hope this was some help!
