Do Canadians need a passport to DRIVE to the US?

Im driving to the US, and i was wondering if i needed a passport. I have birth certificate, health card, driver`s license and social insurance, would that be enough?

  1. The law for needing a passport to enter the US starts in August so if your planning on getting in now with all of the stuff you have you should be good:)

  3. you need a passport after jan 2009 if driving into the states, so your other id is fine.

Hi.  I live in Windsor, Ontario, and cross the Detroit-Windsor border at least twice monthly.  For LAND crossing at present you require the following:  (1) valid government-issued photo ID, such as your driver's license, and (b) your original birth certificate.  That'll do it.  The passport stipulation has been put off till at least June, 2009, as they are still toying with the idea of having enchanced licenses, etc., but nothing determined yet, so you will be fine with the above.
