Do Carmo, Andino and Andre prevail in opening round of Mr Price Pro Ballito – Surfing news
Brazil’s David do Carmo, America’s Kolohe Andino and Brazil’s Jadson Andre successfully made it through into Round 2 (Round of 48) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime Mr Price Pro Ballito after claiming victory in their respective Round
1 (Round of 96) heats that went down at Ballito in South Africa on Tuesday, July 2, 2013.
Australia’s Nathan Hedge accompanied Do Carmo into the second round after finishing behind him in second place during the 16th heat of Round 1. America’s Nathaniel Curran finished third, while Hawaii’s Dusty Payne placed fourth. The bottom-two finish lead
to an early exit for both the surfers from the event.
The 17th heat saw New Zealand’s Billy Stairmand claim second place to accompany heat-winner Andino into the next round. Australia’s Jack Freestone and South Africa’s Steven Sawyer rounded out the bottom-two positions, which consequently led to their ejection
from the contention for the event title.
The 18th heat, which also turned out to be the final battle of the day, saw Australia’s Tom Whitaker finishing behind Andre in second place, thus advancing into the next round. Brazil’s Jano Belo and Chile’s Manuel Selman failed to make the Round 2 cut after
finished in third and fourth place respectively.
The opening day of the latest ASP Prime event saw tough surfing conditions prevailing at Ballito, demanding a genuine commitment and determination from the surfers during their heats before awarding them good scores.
Do Carmo put on a solid performance in the 16th heat to walk away with a convincing victory. Though he got off to a slow start, he stepped-up in the final minutes of the heat to post a 7.17 and 6.23 on the score-board, finishing with a decisive heat-total
of 13.40 points.
Hedge made the Round 2 cut as well after clinching second place with a heat-total of 9.97 points. Curran and Payne, however, failed to make a place for themselves in the next round after registering a heat-total of 8.80 and 6.80 points respectively.
The 17th heat saw Andino walked away with a convincing victory after posting a 7.83 on the score-board off his first business-wave early in the heat and backing it up with a 6.43-point ride, thus finishing with a winning heat-total of 14.26 points.
Stairmand accompanied the American surfer into the next round after finishing with a heat-total of 11.90 points. Freestone had to settle for third place despite registering a similar two-wave total, though his highest single-wave score was not as high as
that of his Kiwi rival.
Sawyer finished in fourth place with a heat-total of 9.50 points, thus joining Freestone on the elimination list.
Andre walked away with top honours from the 18th heat after registering a heat-total of 16.50 points, which included a 7.33 and 9.17-point ride.
Whitaker registered a two-wave total of 12.33 points, which proved sufficient to earn him second place and consequently carry him through into the next round.
Belo and Selman finished with a two-wave total of 9.67 and 8.40 points respectively, which led to their premature ejection from the race for the event title.
