Do Carmo, Crews and Ho clinch victory in Round 4 of Mr Price Pro Ballito – Surfing News
Brazil’s David do Carmo, Australia’s Mitch Crews and Hawaii’s Mason Ho walked away with top honours in their respective Round 4 (Round of 24) heats at Mr Price Pro Ballito, the third of eight events on the 2013 Association of Surfing
Professionals (ASP) Prime calendar, which continued at Ballito, South Africa, on Friday, July 5, 2013.
Do Carmo collected a win over Australia’s Dion Atkinson in the sixth heat to qualify for the fifth round (Round of 16), bring the contention for the event title to a premature end for his rival in the process.
The seventh heat saw Crews advance to the next round after getting the better of Brazil’s Jean Da Silva, with the latter getting eliminated from the competition as a result.
He finished on top of New Zealand’s Billy Stairmand in the eighth heat to confirm his place in the fifth round. The latter, however, found himself out of the race for the event title due to his second successive defeat.
The powerful two-meter surf gracing the primary event site on the fifth day of the competition set up a great stage for the exciting surfing talent from around the globe to showcase their exquisite skills on display while battling
it out for survival.
Do Carmo and Atkinson evidently struggled to cope with the conditions while competing for the Round 5 spot in heat 6 of Round 4.
The Brazilian surfer, however, managed to lock a couple of solid waves in the final minutes of the heat and posted a 5.93 and 7.33 on the score-board, just registering a heat-total of 13.26 points.
Atkinson finished with a heat-total of 10.50 points, which forced him to surrender victory and thus eliminated from the competition.
The seventh heat saw Crews get off to a slow start while locking horns with Da Silva in a battle for survival.
The Australian surfer, whoever, managed to find a 6.17 and 6.70-point ride in the dying minutes of the heat, thus finishing with a heat-total of 12.87 points.
Da Silva, on the other hand, struggled to find his rhythm throughout the course of the battle and eventually had to settle for a heat-total of 9.67 points. This consequently made Crew’s effort a winning one and consequently carried
him through into the next round.
The eighth heat saw Ho finished on top of Stairmand at the end of an exciting clash. Both the surfers put on a determined performance and fought tooth-and-nail until the end. The Hawaiian surfer, however, managed to finish with
a decisive heat-total of 15.30 points, courtesy of a 7.70 and 7.60-point ride, against his rival’s two-wave total of 14.83 points to walk away with the win.
