  1. Basically they think its good to give 5% to the church and 5% to another charitable cause, or something along those lines. If you want an idea of how to give your money, that is what they suggest.

Giving in general is very important, but the church does not have an actual 10% requirement or anything like that.

I have seen lately some articles on diocese trying to make it some type of requirement to give 10% but I think the vast majority of Catholics (at least in the US) feel that is a weird/old testament/protestant thing.

  2. you only give what you can afford, you can register your name for an envelope for tax rebates (building projects only) and every thing is completely confidential. some protestants churches call out the names of donors which make things awkaward for some people

  3. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

  4. Kind of.

The Catholic Church does not teach giving 10% to the Church. Tithing is the part of the Mosaic Law that covers temple worship.

Jesus fulfilled the Law of Moses.

Christians are not held to the ceremonial parts of the Mosaic Law concerning of dietary purity and temple worship.

Christians are held to the moral law of God, some of which is expressed in the Ten Commandments.

However Jesus took the Ten Commandments to the next step summarizing them into the two Great Commandments:

    • You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.

    • You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

    And teaching things like

    • Everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

    • Everyone is our neighbor including our enemies.

Therefore we have to go much farther than the original recipients of the Ten Commandments ever dreamed.

Catholics need to examine their personal finances, determine what part of their God-given time, talent, and treasure they can freely choose to give back.

    With love in Christ.
