Do Co-operatives work?

Question

My small town has lost a major service that we really need and i have heard of Co-operatives where the commuity owns the business so they can keep the service. But i can't find much info on the net about what happens after the business is set up. so i was wondering if anyone has any experacine with these? are they worth it? and is a long term solution?

any advice would be wonderfull!!

I know of one that has been successful for at least sixty years.  It's the Sussex Rural Electric Co-op.  See the link below.  Maybe you can contact them for help with your business model.
