Do EMT's and Medics only travel in twosomes in the ambulances? Could another medic come along and who drives?

  1. EMS crews are at a minimum of 2, although 2 is the norm.  More crew members can be on board at any time especially if the case warrants it.  Typically the higher licensed EMT is in the back with the patient and the lower licensed EMT is driving.  In very simple cases, the higher licensed medic may deligate a patient to the lower licensed medic, but the higher licensed medic still has ultimate responsiblility for the patient.


  2. NO! There is generally 2 people on an ambulance.

    But I have ridden on one with 4 people on it.

    The driver, is a person that has gone through what is called evoc (emergency vehicle operators course.) As far as  WHO drives, that is assigned at the beginning of a shift, Or when we get a call anyone with evoc training may drive.

    Note: usually paramedic units have 3 people onboard. Due to more serious calls, and more help needed in the unit.
