Lets say for example that in an international contest (or sports in general) in the finals Belgium vs Australia .

Will the other Europeans (French, UK, Italians, Greeks, Austrians etc) support Belgium?

  1. not really

  2. If England's playing, I support England, because that's where I'm from. If they're not playing but Australia or NZ are, I'll support them. If none of the three are playing, I support the underdog because it's always better when they win. I guess there's a big difference between supporting your country and supporting your continent, because I'd sooner jump off a cliff than cheer against England, but don't feel any reason to support Europe.

Or maybe that's just a result of England losing the European Cup too much.

  3. No. If, say, France is playing Ghana in any sport -- most Germans will pull for Ghana. I went to a fan zone in Cologne during the World Cup back in 2006 for the US game against Italy, and several Germans and Dutch guys in the crowd were pulling for the US. It's like in the USA -- two states right next to each other usually have an intense sports rivalry, and the loosing state team tends *not* to support the state team from right next door in future games.
