I've never heard of a case where the Queen of England has knighted a female. Anyone care to give me a case? And what are they named after being knighted?

  1. The Ceremony has the same name but women are know as Dame, it is a later equivalent title. A knights title / Knighthood was originally for men who had had a good military career.

  2. no.  because in order to be a knight, one must be a man.

The equivalent is a dame.  As in Dame Margot Fonteyne, Dame Maggie Smith.  I think both the Redgraves are Dames, as well.

  3. Dame is the female equivalent of address to Sir for a British knighthood. In the UK honours system, this can be the title of a woman who has been awarded the Order of the Bath, Order of St Michael and St George, Royal Victorian Order, or Order of the British Empire. Because there is no female equivalent of a Knight Bachelor, women deserving an honour of this rank are appointed Dames of the Order of the British Empire instead. Another difference between a "Sir" and a "Dame" is that wives of knights are entitled to the honorific "Lady" before their husband's surname. However, the husbands of Dames have no honorific.

Famous females who were invested as a Dames

    - Helen Mirren (DBE) - British actress

    - Julie Elizabeth Andrews (DEB) - British actress

    - Joanne "Jo" Rowling (OBE) - British author

Fun Fact: The youngest person to receive a damehood is Dame Ellen MacArthur at 28. The eldest was Dame Gwen Ffrangcon-Davies, who received hers at the age of 100.

  4. Yes,women do:the honor is called a DAMESHIP. Kiri te Kanawa,Margaret Thatcher and Elizabeth Taylor, and Olympic Medalist Kelly Holmes are some of the honorees. They are called "Dame Given Name Surname."

    From http://www.royal.gov/uk/output/Page4877....

"A knighthood (or a damehood, its female equivalent) is one of the highest honours an individual in the United Kingdom can achieve."

  5. They are known as dames (and possibly as ladies, I'm not entirely sure about the ladies part).  I don't know what they call the ceremony, though.

The reason we (assuming you are in America) call women ladies is as a matter of respect.  Referencing them as a member of the nobility class of old England before we split off from them.  Eventually it just became accepted that all women were known as ladies when showing them respect.

  6. The female equivalent of Knight is Dame and Dame is also their title whereas Knights are called "Sir". However, unlike men they aren't touched on each shoulder with a sword, they are just given the medal.

  7. MEN GET KNIGHTED AS "SIR" LIKE SIR "ALEX FERGESON" AND SIR "MAGDY YAQUB",FEMALES NOT KNIGHTED BUT HAS AN EQUIVALENT TITLE CALLED"DAMES",LIKE DAME JUDY DENSH,DAME MAGGIE SMITH.

I will get knighted soon when I go to UK.but sometimes people call me "sir" anyway even without being knighted.

please guys no need for " thumbs down"!! LOL.

  8. The order or the empire can be given to men and women. Men add Sir to their name, and women add Dame to theirs (eg, Sir Paul McCartney, Dame Judy Dench).

  9. yes, women can be knighted.  Men are called Sir and women are called Dame, but all are knights.  Sveral examples have been given by others (such as Dame Judy Dench, who plays M in the recent James Bond Films)

  10. Yes, they do. They are called Dames, as in Dame Judi Dench, Dame Joan Sutherland. I have provided a wikipedia entry about the British Honour System, and another with a list of all Dames in the last 100 years.

  11. A woman who is knighted recieves the title "Dame." (like Dame Judy (not sure if I spelt her name right) Dench.
