Do Feminists put women first or equality?

Gloria Steinem addressed a reporter who suggested that by lowering standards for firefighters to allow women to better compete for careers in this area was actually placing the population at risk. He was speaking about how previously a firefighter had to be able to carry an average weight man on his back up and down a ladder. Gloria responded by saying it was ridiculous to expect anyone to be able to perform that feet and everyone knows that its safer to drag a body than to carry!

The truth of the matter is that the most toxic of gases are found in the lower10". Gloria would see people killed for her cause but is that typical of most feminist?

  1. i don't know about typical, i don't know many feminist personally. But the subject you just wrote about sounds like she is putting women first not equallity.

  2. Originally they were for equality.  Today some are for women.  So many women are fair yet a few of the unbalanced ones have hijacked the cause.

  3. Me: equality.

However if I wanted to carry an average man up and down a ladder I would have to gym it for far longer than my boyfriend would. The point is I should feel able to try, if I want to.

Alternately, I saw a female bodybuilder on TV who was stronger than my boyfriend. It really should be a clear question of ability to do the job.

Gloria was probably having an "off day". We all have them, days when we s***w up at work. That's equality; accepting that feminist writers are human beings who's word is not gospel or representive of feminists (or women!) everywhere. If caught off guard, it may not even be representitve of what  that person actually thinks, just what came tumbling out at the time, only for them later to think "d**n......I should have said..".

  4. Yes, that is typical of the new radical feminism. Their agenda first, to h.ell with the truth and public safety.

I am female and was a volunteer firefighter here in the country (USA). It does require a great deal of strength and perspicacity to be able to save lives. One shouldn't monkey with that! Lives come first, agenda's dead last.

    Best wishes. :o)

  5. From my experience it depends on what feminist you speak with.

I've spoken with many who truly go by what the original movement stood for. They just want social, political and economical equality for all. Then I've also met feminists who are the ravening lunatics that put themselves before anyone and everyone.

People vary and no one person truly speaks for an entire group of people.

  6. The original or first feminists were for equality ... the great majority these days are for putting women higher than men and everything else

  7. Good Question!

In this case I would say Gloria in putting women first.

I think it's probably typical. Womens rights are important to our society, it makes our nation stronger. However a woman shouldn't get a job based on the sole reason that she's female. It needs to be given to the right person for the job.

I'd like to someday see a woman as president, that doesn't mean that I want to risk lives in a situation like the one you described.

I guarantee you that there are women out there who can lift and carry a 250lb person out of a burning house, it's fact. I also guarantee that there are men who can't carry a 150lb person out of a burning house.

    Where is Gloria's commonsense?

  8. I put equality first; I think the standards should be the same for everyone. Maybe, in some cases, those standards are a little unrealistic.
