  1. It's not up to them to pick their formats. Unless they have been listening to that format for a long time and have decided to work at that station deliberately, yes, they do realize it.

  2. whether the jockey like it or not they sign a contract when they agree to be the on air host for a show. they agree to do whatever format the program director and management tells them to do. its not their choice. their simply doing what their told

  3. Some do, some don't. In either case, format is usually handed down by whatever large, corporate entity owns the station. This means that the DJ has very little (read: zero) control over what music gets played. So If they want their job, they will just announce whatever they are told to announce and be happy they have a job at all.

Sorry, it sounds mean, but that's often how it is, these days anyway.

Exception: College radio, some public stations, and even a, very few, independently owned radio stations will allow their DJs to choose what they play. In that case, if the format "Zuck"s, then it is the DJs fault. :)

    Rock on,

  4. FM disc jockeys have no say in the music they play. It is done by the program director. Formats are created to sell advertisng and not necessarily entertain anyone in the process. If they can't sell advertising to any major demos such as women 18-34 or men 18-49, etc. then the format will change so then can. It depends on the advertisers and how many people the radio station can reach in a quarter hour.
