I'd kind of like to think they wear a gown because it would be awkward and maybe even cold in the delivery room if they were nude.

They wear a medical gown as most of them give birth in hospital. A nightgown would be awkward, and I won't mention the clean up bill. The only ones who would be nude would be those using the water birth technique where they give birth in a small pool, though this is not much used in France.
