  1. We don't have an "SIT" team, but if we want to refer students for intervention yes they want the written paper trail.

  2. In my system they complete a referral form and yes, they must highlight the interventions they've tried in the classroom.  If you're system doesn't have a form, I'd just type up a letter and give it to the team.  I'd also give a copy to the guidance counselor and I'd file a copy in the student record.

  3. Yes. You don't have to be a special education teacher to refer a student to a SIT team. But you have to fill out a form indicating what behaviors or concerns you have that warrant a SIT. You also need to indicate what interventions you have tried, which ones have been successful and which ones haven't.  There must be a written record of what the issues are and what you have done to deal with them.

Talk to your administrator or special ed chairperson. Let your department chair know also. Your school may have a specific hierarchy or a specific way to refer a child and you don't want to ruffle any feathers.

  4. It depends on the system your school has set in place.  At my school, regular teachers are generally the ones who refer students to SIT.  We have to have made 2 parent contacts regarding the problems the student is having before we can refer a student.  Other than that, the rest is dealt with during the SIT meeting.

  5. The first person at he school to notice a struggling student is their classroom teacher, so they are the ones to organize a (we call it SAT) for the student. A SAT is not done for special ed students because they are supposed to have a case conference. At the SAT the teacher explains the problem and the team works out some interventions to try for the student and then agree to come back together at a set time to discuss the result of the interventions. There is usually a special ed teacher on the team because if the interventions do not work, special ed may be the next step.
