  1. Exploration geologist - lots of travel to go where the rocks are

Petroleum geologist - could go either way, but you'll have to live in an oil-friendly city or country (Houston, Denver, Alaska, etc.)

Environmental geologist - may only travel to job sites within your specific town or city to do field work

Basically, you can pick a discipline that has you traveling all the time or not at all. Some people get into geology to spend their days outside, others prefer something a little more predictable. I've done both and there are advantages either way.

  2. some companies hire geologists to check underground to see what type of minarets are on the property be for the company will buy the place. Oil companies hire geologists to fine oil or natural gas deposits.these jobs pay well but if you want to keep the earth beautiful work for the state or the United States Geological Society there you will have more excitement and get to go many place and see some outstanding things

  3. It depends on the company and position.  Some jobs are 100% travel, some are 50%, and some are 0%.

  4. Depends on what your line of work is, as the title "geologist" is quite a broad definition. If you are an exploration geologist in minerals or oil, yes you may "have" to travel a lot. On the other hand, if you are a geologist working in government or with an urban environmental company, you most likely could sleep in your own bed every night.

I have about a kazillion frequent flyer points, and have worked in 40 different countries. Another geologist with my company doesn't like traveling because of young children, and she stays in the office year round.  Take your pick.

Most geologists I know enjoy traveling, and they see it as an opportunity.  In general, if you are reluctant to travel, then you should probably consider another line of work.
