  1. I will answer the 2nd part since the first was answered by many. The cause or the justification for the invasion was Georgia's attacks on separatists groups that are on its Territory but aligned with Russia. The response of Russia however is a whole different reason. Russia doesn't care much about Georgia's oil or ports as implied by the media. The real reason goes back to the Cold War era, when Georgia and a handful of other nations were part of the Soviet Union. These small nation got the separation after the break up of the Soviet union, but got no single nuclear weapon of the huge Soviet arsenal. Therefore, all these small nations aligned with the West, and with the U.S. in particular. That angered the Russians, who want more influence in the region. So, the attack was a signal to these democratically elected, westernized nation joining NATO that their alliance with the West does not protect them from Russia.

  2. They do not speak the same language, although many are bilingual.  Russia and Georgio have been disputing the same territory for about a decade.  Georgia claims it as part of Georgia but Russia has issued Russian passports to the people living there.  Georgia sent troops into the are to reclaim it and then Russia attacked, drove the Georgians out but then continued on into areas that are undisputably within Georgia.  Russia also claims that Georgia has been harboring chechyan terrorists for years, but Georgia calls them freedom fighters and denies harboring them.

  3. No, they speak their own language and have their own alphabet.  Some of them speak Russian though cause they are so close and mixed with the culture.  I don't know exactly what the cause is but my ex boyfriend that is from there says its because Russia doesn't want Georgia to be a Democracy. A Russian friend of mine said it was about Oil in the specific area that is being invaded.....

  4. Few Russians speak Georgian, but most Georgian's speak Russian.

Georgia invaded Osetia in order to take it over.  Russia invaded Georgia in order to push them back.
