Question:

Do Goldfish Hate Other Species of Goldfish?

I cycled my new 50 gallon for over a month and it was finally time for fish. I got 2 ryukins and an oranda. Both are fancies with the same body type so it was good. The oranda was happy and eating. Then three days later I wake up and he is at the bottom of the tank dead with the ryukins swimming around innocently. I never once saw them chase or be nippy with the oranda. The aquarium is right next to the TV so I am watching it pretty frequently.

I returned the dead oranda for an alive one. Two days later it is dead. So instead of an oranda I bought a fantail the next time. The next day he is dead with the ryukins swimming around innocently. I made another trip to the pet store and returned the dead fantail for a ryukin. So it's been a few weeks now and everyone is alive and healthy. Are my ryukins little fishy racists?

  1. I don't think so - goldfish are typically very peaceful fish. Maybe your cycle isn't completely done yet. It's also possible that the ryukin breeders are taking better care of their fry than the orandas/fantail, or they could be coming from a tank with disease or OTS.

I do not believe your goldfish are killing each other though.

    Good luck!

  2. yikes goldfish will get along with any other fancy goldfish the problem you put a newly bought fish directly to your old tank.  You should first quarantine the fish and observe for diseases and conditioned them before putting them into your tank.  probably they are sick fish.  Wow they really exchange the dead fish for a new one for free.

    kOi keeper & goldfish keeper.

  3. There's only one species of _goldfish_.

My biochem teacher had fish (none of which were goldfish) that he had to put in separate tanks in order to keep one species from batting the other onto the 'land' part of the tank.

  4. lol looks that way.
