Page Rank does not equal rankings.

Toolbar Page Rank is Google's way of allowing us to gauge their trust of a web page.  That trust (displayed as 1-10) is  based on inbound links to a web page & other elements, but Google's ranking algorithm (the method used to cause some sites to rank #1 & others to rank #100) isn't fully dependent on the Page Rank of a web page.

In fact, as of last year or so on SEO Moz (I believe) it was stated that Page Rank is only one of hundreds of factors that determines a web page's rankings in Google.

Bottom line - page rank means relatively little unless your particular business model depends on it (selling links, selling websites or domains) -and if you are hedging your business on something that you don't own or control (Google Page Rank), you should probably look to do something else.  If you're chasing after links or Page Rank, that's not really a sound business decision.

Now, I'm not saying Page Rank isn't important, though - if you have a higher Page Ranked site, you'll have more trust with Google, chances are your new pages will be indexed quicker than on sites with low-to-no Page Rank and your pages will receive more inherent trust (thus higher rankings) than the same content being posted on other websites.

Page Rank has its benefits, but it's not some magical potion that'll guarantee you top rankings.

Thats because PageRank does not really matter.  Traffic matters, not Pagerank.  Don't rely on another company (Google) for the success of your website

Perhaps that Number 1 site was an exact match for whatever keyword search you did. The keyword could have been in the page title or the url. It could be an excellently designed page with few links coming into it.
