Do Green Card holders get a Social Security Card/Number when entering the US. If not why do I have one???

  1. My wife got her social security number when we got married in Subic Bay.  No, it does not make you a citizen.


  2. No. You have to apply for citizenship to get it. A green card just means you're here legally, or so they say. You get a SS card so you can pay taxes.

You can have an SSN without being a citizen - it simply means you have to legal right to work here.  If you are a legal resident, you need to do nothing more.  If you want to travel outside the country, you probably will need to get your PR card (form I-551) replaced, to prove you are a Permanent resident when you return to the US.

  5. 1. You probably don't have one because you haven't applied one, yet.

    2. SSN is not the proof of citizen. Non US citizens who have certain visa type holders can also acquire it.

    3. You need to go to one of Social Security Agent near you and apply one with the proof of your green card. In other words, you need to apply new Green Card first in order to get SS Card.
