  1. Hi Gus,  Greenies are against cars not only their lights.

Its accepted that we have to travel for work,  leisure, holidays because that is what we do in a modern world.

It is time that we spend more to find greener ways to travel, instead we spend our time and our youths lives at war over fuel when we should be perfecting the Hydro car the test are very positive.  Lets stop being held to ransom by the Oil Rich Nations and American Petrol Companies.

They didn't want us to have the ever lasting light bulb but we do have the low energy ones now that last for years and they  are priced really cheap now.

  2. And blinding the oncoming traffic!!!!

  3. Bloody greenies. Should all be strung up.

  4. Gus,

    Good one.

Switching all the lights on does technically put a drain on the alternator, which then uses a tad more fuel. But it is negligable compared to say air conditioning compressors, electric windows and roofs, and poor battery maintenance.

I fail to understand the "green" use of electric cars.

OK they whizz about with zero emmission, and the driver with a smug smile. But, and it is a big but, the energy must come from somewhere. We cannot create energy, as there is a finite amount of it in the universe. So it comes from power stations. Worse than square one, as the energy losses in the generation, distrubution, charging, and the motor will lose about 30-40 % in heat.

A couple of headlights pale away in comparison.

    Hey Ho,

  5. in some countries its the law.  I think sweden is one. Hence volvos always having their lights on

  6. Yes, it's an unnecesary practice of very questionable benefit and like you say the collective impact of millions of cars using that tiny bit more fuel to run the lights/turn the alternator with that slightly increased load is quite significant. Not least in your pocket over the working life of the car and refilling it with fuel.

  7. The lights run off a rechargeable battery...therefore it doesn't contribute to pollution.

  8. Car lights are about the most efficient thing you can find. This post is typical of people who do not look at detail properly but want to ban this ban that.

For your info, car lights in European countries are a legal safety requirement for.

Another bit of info is as long as the car is being used ( engine on, that is) no extra fuel is used to run the lights. The lights run on an alternator which constantly charges the battery when the engine is running. Hope you find this useful.

  9. First, you aren't wasting ANY fuel.  The lights run off of the battery.  The battery is charged by the alternator.  The alternator runs when the car is on, regardless of whether you have your lights on.

Second, it's been proven that having your lights on reduces accidents.  Think about the evironmental waste produced when a wreck occurs.  Even if the car isn't totalled, you still have to throw away the body parts that get messed up, and paint the new ones, not to mention the glass and other debris that are left on the road.

I'm no expert, but common sense tells me that if we can make the roads safer, then this will have a positive effect on the environment.

  10. yes.annoying.
