  1. I didn't find that either smelled that much (i had both as a small child), but my guinea pigs were housed outside, so they perhaps would smell more than hamsters in an inside environment.

But as long as the cage/hutch is kept clean, and its not placed somewhere overly warm, you should be able to keep any smell to a minimum

  2. Hamsters have smaller noses than guinea pigs so they can't sniff as much. Actual porker pigs have much larger noses so they can smell plenty, especially if they are searching for truffles... xx

  3. Kept indoors a hamster would smell much less than a guinea pig and be much less work to keep.  A hamster may be noisy at night though so have somewhere away from your bedroom to keep it overnight.  Guinea pigs are great fun and very rewarding but require a lot more care and attention than hamsters.

  4. I have two guinea pigs, they might be a little more work, because they need more space to move freely in, they don't smell if you clean the cage. I do know that guinea pigs make much better pets. They are very social and I have never had one that bit at all.  But if it won't actually be part of the family, or you don't have a lot of time to care for, I'd go with the hamster.
