I always post my thoughts on Trip Advisor and just wondered if Hotel Managers actually read it and take notice, of the good and bad! Thanks!

  1. As a hotel manager, I can say that I read them, and just about every one of my colleagues reads them as well.  Most managers are going to take your comments and evaluate them to see if changes in procedures or policy are necessary.  Of course, there are always going to be people who will read them and ignore them.

One thing you should understand is that web sites such as Trip Advisor are just one way that we get feedback- if a hotel is affilliated with a chain (Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt, etc.) then those chains also have their own systems to get feedback from guests.  Other common ways to give feedback is from the comment cards left in rooms, or simply speaking with a manager while you are staying in the hotel.

If you have a serious problem- or if your stay was absolutely perfect- please speak with a manager in person.  This will be the best way to communicate your feelings and get a response.  From there, if you feel like your experience is worth sharing with other people, then post on Trip Advisor.  But simply posting on Trip Advisor will almost never elicit a response from a hotel- mostly because of privacy issues. And also- believe it or not- other hotels will post negative comments about their competitors  (although fairly rare).

So, to sum up: if you want the hotel to know about your experience and do something about it, speak with a manager while you are at the hotel.  If you want other people (and probably the hotel) to know about your experience, post to Trip Advisor.

  2. In my experience they do not. I travel from the UK to the Far East frequently, and check Tripadvisor evey time before I go. I then compare those reviews with what I actually find. Allowing for the fact that everybody is different, I do not always agree with entries in Tripadvisor, but it does give a good feeling in advance regarding where you will be staying. Essential when booking on the net as well. I do ask hotel managers if they check Tripadvisor, and most of them do not know about the site. It should be compulsory for them to do so, as a lot of folks prefer to make comments on the site, not personally when checking out.

  3. Yes, some do, in fact, TripAdvisor allows hotel managers to respond to reviews posted on the site...I've seen a few here and there, but not many (unfortunately).

I think most hotel managers fall under 1 of the following categories:

    - Never heard of TripAdvisor (by now, who hasn't?)

    - Heard about TripAdvisor, but doesn't care (the worst kind of hotel manager...obviously doesn't care)

    - Reads the reviews but dismisses them (sad...again, probably doesn't really care)

    - Reads the reviews and acts upon them (takes care of the negative things, continues the positive things -- winner!)

  4. Yes, they most certainly do. it is the bible to some hotels trying just to keep the standards they have now.
