Question:

Do I HAVE to change my alternator for a multiply battery setup?

I have a 2005 Centurion and am adding a fairly large stereo to it.

My question is, do I have to change my stock alternator or will it work with the setup I have? I'm running 1 battery for the engine and 3 seperate batteries isolated by a battery isolator from Stinger. All batteries are connected in parallel to maintain the 12V system. My main concern is will I damage the charging system if I don't change the alternator out for a larger 200A one.

Any help is greatly appriciated!

  1. alternator is o.k,i would get a split charging system to save the engine battery draining into the other battery's when you turn the isolator switch back on,

  2. no

  3. You don't have to change it, but you could go to a wrecking yard and see if they have a similar Alternator but larger output that will fit, usually you can get them about $25.00 and "New condition" if your lucky

  4. Stock alternator should be OK.  If you want to play it safe, check with your local dealer or marina.

  5. hubby says to get bigger alternator or buy optima marine batteries because the bigger radio will draw more juice
