Im planning to travel in 2-1-08 to tijuana baja california, mexico and i want to know if i need a passport to go and come back to the united states

  1. With the new passport laws effective just this year the answer is yes.  Better to double check with US immigration as they keep changing the dates.


  2. A resounding yes! Legally, Customs and Immigration can't keep out American citizens with alternative IDs, but it will be a hassle. Get the passport.

  3. Currently, the State Department says that border-crossers will need to have some proof of U.S. citizenship/residency as of Jan. 31, 2008, to cross land border entry points. If you don't have a passport, take your birth certificate (assuming you were born in the U.S.).

    A lot of people are complaining that this will cause huge problems at the border, so the State Department might (just my opinion) postpone the rule. Keep an eye out for news on this as you approach your travel date.

    But just in case, make sure you have a copy of your birth certificate (a certified copy would be best), and a government-issued photo ID.
