Do I Need All Of These On My Computer?

When I go to Add/Remove Programs I have Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1, Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1, Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 1, and Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5. I really don't know much about computers and have no idea what these programs are so do I need all of these on my computer or can I get rid of some of them and just keep the most recent versions?

  1. NET Framework is used by all programs that use Microsoft's CLR (common language runtime). This is Microsoft's answer to the Java run-time environment. The languages, VB.NET and C# use the .NET Framework to execute "Managed" code. C/C++ developers on Windows have the option of using the .NET Framework as well.

You only need the latest version of the .NET Framework installed since applications developed for older versions will still run in the newer version. So you can safely remove the older versions.

I usually wait to remove an unused Windows application until a service pack comes out for it. Then instead of installing the service pack just for the application, I uninstall it. I have done this for Outlook Express, for example, since I never use Outlook Express and Microsoft is always pushing out a new anti-spam list for it.

  2. Sometimes you need these programs to run other programs but usually if you go to install a program that needs them, it will tell you and then you have to download it so the choice is yours uninstall them and download when needed or leave them alone

Hope this helps you make a decision

  3. Not really every time I reformatted and do a windows update I never install those I just ignore them and focus on the other updates and nothing bad happens no issue nothing.
