Do I Need To Pay Taxes?!?!?!?

i am 15 years old and install cabinetry with my stepfather. i have a busy schedule with basketball and school so i just put in a few hours every now and then. my question is, do i need to pay taxes even though i am not technically employed? any help would be appreciated.

  1. If your stepfather is in business for himself (a sole proprietorship), then you are not subject to Social Security or Medicare tax on your earnings.  You would have to earn more than $5,400 in 2008 before you would have to file taxes or owe any income tax.

    If your stepfather is not in business for himself, the business may issue you a 1099MISC.  You should file if you earn more than $400, and you would owe some Social Security and Medicare tax.


  2. If you are a contractor and not an employee, then you have to pay taxes if you are making over $400 a year.  If you are an employee, and get a paycheck with social security and medicare taken out, then you don't have to file unless you make over $5450.

  3. If you are making more than $400 a year, technically you have to file taxes.  If your step father is paying you cash, and you do not get a W-2 don't worry about it.  

  4. Are you getting paid for working? If so it depends on your earning at the end of the year.
