Question:

Do I feed my cat too much?

This is what I feed my cat daily is it too much.

For awhile all I did was feed my cat wet canned food but I read here that's not a good idea because cats should have dry food in their diet too. So I started mixing dry food with his wet food. He eats about 4 cans of the friskies wet food mixed in with dry food.

I think sometimes he eats like 5 cans it depends if he leaves to play outside. He's not exactly an indoor cat. Anyways, do I feed him too much?

This is the dry food he eats, he has all those flavors because I try to mix up his flavors so he doesn't get tired of eating the same thing.

And of course his standard wet food.

  1. Sure sounds like alot of food for one cat...  I feed my 3 year old feline 2/3 cups of dry food in the morning and she just nibbles away at it all day.  There is always a little bit left in her bowl in the morning.  Next time you're at the vet with your cat, ask his/her opinion - I think you would get your best answer there.

    Good luck!

  2. You heard wrong. there is never a reason to feed dry foods ever

More on that in a minute. That is alot of food for 1 cat to be eating. Is he losing any weight?> drinking alot? p**p normal?

       Now nutrtion

Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s health

Contrary to what you may have heard; dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.

Please read the label on what you are feeding? What are the ingredients? Do you know what they mean? Is the first ingrediant a muscle meat like chicken or meal or other things?

Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s and a host of other problems. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods. Rashes, scabs behind the tail and on the chin are all symptoms

The problems associated with Dry food is that they are loaded with grains and carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process.  Also, Most of the moisture a cat needs is suppose to be in the food but in

Dry, 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Another thing, most use horrible ingredients and don't use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive.

You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn't have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all.    The best food for cats does not contain any grains at all.

Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies  whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. I would rather feed a middle grade canned food then the top of the line dry food.

Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Does a hard pretzel clean your teeth or do pieces of it get stuck? http://www.felinefuture.com/nutrition/bp...

    Please read about cat nutrition.

Vetinarian diets  The reason your vet thinks so highly of the pet food they sell probably has more to do with money than nutrition. In vet school, the only classes offered on nutrition usually last a few weeks, and are taught by representatives from the pet food companies. Vet students may also receive free food for their own dogs and cats at home. They could get an Iams notebook, a Purina purse and some free pizza.  http://iml.jou.ufl.edu/projects/Spring04...

  3. I leave food out for my cats all the time. I know your not ment to but it makes me happy knowing that they have food/water there all the time even when im asleep if they get hungry.

  4. No the amount you are feeding him is normal...plus if he was really that full he would just go off and do something else so it's the cats choice whether he wants to eat it.

  5. You don't need wet and dry food.

You need a complete, dry food, and it's fine to stick with one flavour- cats don't realize what they're missing.

Basically, look for a good, dry complete food, and feed it two to three times a day, the amount it says on the pack. Feeding wet and dry food together is pointless and also pointlessly expensive.

  6. You do not have to feed your cat wet food, but that is your preference.  It sounds like way too much, but is your cat overweight?  I free feed my cats and I know that they do not eat nearly that much a day and are all in great shape.  Read the back of the packaging, it will tell you the recommended amount of food.

  7. You feed your cat 4 to 5 cans + dry food A DAY?!

Correct me please if i misunderstood but if that is the case:

I would say that is WAY to much. I have a cat myself, and i feed him 2x 1/4 can a day, in the morning and in the evening, so that is one can every 2 days, sometimes even 3, depending on his rabbit catches.

About dry food, my cat doesn't like it that much, but i make sure there is always a little bit ready for him to get when he wants it, but usually he doesn't eat much of it.

    I hoped this helped

Ps. If you really feed him to much, you can probably tell after some time:P

  8. WOW~

That really seems like too much. But it does all depend on the bone structure of your cat and its weight. I have 3 of my own. They are smaller cats. I feed each of them about 1/3 cup of dry food twice a day. I do not free feed because it teaches them to eat when food is present and it helps to control their eating habits. Now mind you my cats understand that when food is put out they must eat, or they will wait until the next meal time, and half of the time they don't finish their food. Another reason I do not free feed is that there are three of them and I want them all to get an equal chance to eat and make sure that each of them are eating a good amount.

Also, I feed them Science Diet. This food is AWESOME. A bit more expensive, BUT they eat LESS and use the litter box LESS. Which ultimately cuts down on you having to buy litter. Science diet is not full of fillers like other brands such as PURINA or FRISKIES. These cheaper foods have some nutrition, but the cat must eat A LOT more to get the same nutrition as when you but a higher quality food.

I use wet food sparingly. I consider these "treats". I use one packet of the moist food per day. Usually at night, and I split up one packet between the three of them. I just use it as a topper for the dry food. I don't feed them too much of the moist food, as this allows for dental problems later in life. Cats live for a good amount of years, and dry food allows their teeth to stay strong and healthy.

My cats are at perfect weight, they have muscle, are indoor, satisfied with their food, healthy, happy, playful, beautiful shiny coats, and they are EASY to manage.

*We owned a dog once that ONLY ate wet food, and she passed away because her teeth basically rotted away. That is why I don't feed wet food as much.
