Do I file a police report? Mail theft?

If someone receives US Mail that does not belong to them (due to carrier error) and they do not return to adressee or post office, is this mail theft?

Especially if the mail they are not returning is a US Passport and Original birth certificate?

I spoke w/USPS supervisor and the package was definitely delivered, and either stolen out of my mailbox or delivered to the wrong address and the person has not returned it to me or post office.

Should I file a police report? I have already taken other steps as far as getting a new birth cert and passport.

  1. Well you need proof.  Without it, you can't do anything.

  2. You don't know who it was delivered to, but you can file a missing passport/birth certificate in case of identity theft you might need that later.

  3. If those documents named were involved, yes you need to file a police report and prepare for a possible identity theft.

  4. file it against who?  you have no proof.

  5. definatly...god forbid it got in the wrong hands they can steal your identity...file a police report and i'd check my credit maybe contact a lawyer...sorry...

  6. You are not responsible to correctly deliver letter erroneously delivered to your postal address. There is no crime on the part of the person who received the letters.

  7. Unless you knew who took it,  what good would that do.

You would not report it to the police.  It is a federal issue.
