Perhaps this is a nit-picky type question but I wanted to know the answer. I´m trying to get a good workout but find I don´t have great balance on the running machine. Should I hold on or not?

  1. Don't hold. Think about it. You get a whole body workout if you swing your arms.

  2. Absolutely, when you are running, your legs and arms are naturally "tied together." Holding on to the bar changes your posture, which not only removes the natural arm swing motion from the equation but alters your stride and narrows your chest.  It is beneficial for legs, your breathing and for your overall workout to run with your arms to your side swinging them naturally. Without your arms, running is more work for your legs, and standing all the way straight up is one of the most important things when jogging. You would defniately feel the effects on your muscles over time.

If balance is a problem, start slow and gradually pick up the pace, it shouldn't feel any differently than jogging around the block. And also get a good pair of shoes, not all running shoes are the same. There are stores such as the Good Feet store where they will analyze the way you walk and run and fit you with a pair of shoes that will work for YOU.
