Do I have Ivy / Vine growing in my garden or is it a weed?

I wish I could upload a picture but I can't. I'll do my best to describe it.

It's not Poison Ivy, being that the 'fruits' are not small and greenish-yellow. The stem also is a smooth green/brown and a little red in some bends or twists along a tree it is climbing on.

The leaves are green, a fuzz texture, 3 pointed, and edgey. When I touch the plant I smell a funky slightly minty-weed smell. The fruits/seeds (I'm no sure what they are) vine out and are large and green. The largest ones are the sixe of ping-pong balls or slightly smaller. These fruits/seeds are encased in a net of sorts from the very vine it extends from.

I started watering it just about a month ago. I thought it was pretty cool being that the vines curl at the ends and had been climbing onto a tree of mine. So I continued to water it here and there. It's now about... 7 feet tall/long!

I live in South Texas, average of about 95 degrees Faren., dry and lately... humid.

Could it be a weed or an Ivy?

  1. I'd recommend lopping off a piece of it and taking it to your local nursery before you do anything about it, but if it's growing that quickly and is that striking, it's probably a weed! Too bad. :(
