Question:

Do I have Nonverbal learning disorder?

I have struggled through my life with certain categories of learning while excelling in others. I have always done very well in anything to do with stories, I.E. Literature, History, etc,

However I can barely make it through math, especially as soon as basic algebra comes in. Also I am very confused by grammar though I naturally write very well "by ear".

I just found the definition of NDL and it seems to fit me very well in many places and not in others. I always was clumsy, and bad at sports, awkward in social situations, naive in relationships, and poor at video games.

But I am also an artist, and can be very intuitive in comprehension of literature, music, art and humor.

I am now going for my PhD in literature and am being confronted with complaints about the organization of my writing.

If I do have Nld maybe I can get help learning this organization and helping my grammar. Does anyone know if I sound like I have Nld, and/or offer ideas on new learning strategies?

  1. It sounds like aspergers syndrome.People with aspergers are very good in certain things and bad at others,They are very uncomfortable in social situations and naive in relationships. They are also clumsy. Some people with aspergers are very inteligent and excel at certain things, but their personal life is a mess.Check out some yahoo groups on aspergers, and www.wrongplanet.Many people with aspergers were never diagnosed. It is very common, but again,it`s hard to diagnose. You know about the autism epidemic, well most likely every kid with autism, has a parent or parents with aspergers syndrome, some may not realize they have it.There are also many older adults that have it and have never been diagnosed.

  2. I teach special ed and from what I have sen NLDs are fairly rare.  The imortant issue though really isnt whether or not you have one.  All the diagnosis gives you is a label.  Whether you have one or not you still need strategies for organizing your writing better.  I would imagine a good writing teacher or tutor would be ale to give you some specific tips.  WIthout reading your writing it's hard to tell what you need to work on.  Also if you do have a NLD and you have made it this far (in an educational system that doesn't usually work well for people with this disorder) then congrats on a job well done.  You have proven that you can adapt and overcome your difficulties and can be successful.  Good luck.

  3. I think your disability may be part of the autism spectrum. Like what the other person said you may have Asperger's. Some autistics are good at literature, but their weaknesses may show in math. I don't think it's NLD. In fact, nothing may be wrong with you at all. Though they just may label you that way. Every person can have any types on abnormalities and weaknesses. It's human nature. I actually disagree with some of the theories of Asperger's.

Type in "autism" or "asperger's" in Google to get some results.
