I'm an entering freshman at Hampton Univeristy and a Finance major. I really want to work for Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, or some other top investment firm. Now I know they look at good grades and internships, but do I have a chance at getting a job at one of these companies(preferbly Goldman Sachs)?

  1. No. You have virtually no chance. Eventually you can earn the chance to get noticed, but without solid academics, work history, advanced education and results in the real world, plus most importantly a contact at the company, you have almost no chance to even be noticed. "Everyone" wants to work for big companies. I've worked for Goldman for 1.5 years and I really had to get the inside track, plus I have my CFA, MBA, and 2 years experience, plus I had to start below entry level (mail room, then secretary). But now I have the real job! I had to make lots of contacts, and meet more and more people to get my resume noticed.

  2. They will consider each applicant individually, looking at your personal merits. Good grades is a given, they would never accept anyone who did not have good grades, so you need to look at what ELSE you have going for you, things that set you appart. Do you speak any other languages to a good standard? Have you been travelling, have you worked whilst studying, been a member of sports teams and clubs, have you done any internships? (If not, it may be a good idea to apply to GS, JP Morgan Chase, etc for internships/placements). Anyone studying for a good degree, especially finance-related and who has excellent grades has a chance.

  3. It depends largely on how much recruiting they normally do at that University.  Certain companies recruit at certain universities and donate money and resources to certain universities.  There is always a chance if you are an exceptional student or know know someone at the company you want to work for.  Follow the money and the connections.
